Virtual Book Par-tay!

It has been a little over 2 months and I am thrilled to say that my little baby book Free Range Chicken Gardens is growing up and is in its FOURTH printing already!  Holy hen manure! I still haven’t wrapped my head around it. I am just elated that so many gardeners are enjoying the book and learning how to provide habitat that can benefit us and our flock and how to utilize chickens for their natural behaviors.

Since I never had a proper book release party (I was recovering from surgery at the time of release) and spring has hit in full force for me already, I didn’t want to miss out on celebrating the book’s success in a way that everyone can join in!  So, it is wonderful that my publisher Timber Press is offering a special giveaway for two great books: Free Range Chicken Gardens  AND The Fresh Egg Cookbook with many of my favorite bloggers who are all fabulous gardening/chicken keeping/foodie rock stars and if you are not already following them, you should be! Be sure to check out their websites below to have multiple chances to win! I am also including the opportunity to win a subscription to Chicken magazine from my blog along with the books- the party contest will end on April 12th!

UPDATED: A big huge thank you to everyone who entered this contest and made the virtual book release party a success!! And congratulations to our winners Lorna, Meghan and Regan!  I hope you enjoy the good chicken reads.

  1. The Fresh Egg cookbook would be great to read

    • I have always wanted chickens. I live in a San Diego County. Last month the rules change allowing backyard chickens. I went out and got 4 chicks, 1 americaucna, 1 barnvelder, 1 wyonette, 1 silkie. My kids and I are very excited. We are busy keeping them warm and safe. Now I am trying to configure where and how to do the coop, economically. My 12 yr old loves gardening and we have a new garden. I could really use the info and expertise from the chicken garden book to help make our experience successful and enjoyable.
      thank you

  5. I posted a link on FB too! Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. Of course I’d like to win all of them! But my first choice is the cook book. I love cooking & my family loves eggs. My second choice is the garden book because gardening is my second love after cooking. Thanks for the giveaway!

I’d love to have the Free Range Chickens book!! Why? Because I have started to raise chickens on my own, without the benefit of the knowledge my family had on our farm. I was young and figured I had plenty of time to learn and remember and when we sold the farm I was still young and knew nothing!! I’m all for anything that is going to help make my little Camillas happy!! 🙂

  49. I have the Free-Range Chicken Gardens book and can’t wait to start to read it! I would love a copy of the cookbook, because sooner or later there are going to be chickens in my garden who are going to be laying eggs!

  50. Agony deciding which prize I would like more! The think the chicken book because I cannot seem to make my hens stay out of my garden so need some tutoring in that area…but the other two items loook almost as inviting! Thanks for the chance to win.

  51. Christine says:

  56. Christina says:

I would love to win the Free-Range Chicken Gardens book because I am in the process of doing some landscaping to my backyard and trying to make it as chicken friendly as possible. We are hoping to overturn the ban we have in our city this year, and when we do I will be getting chickens right away!

  57. I would love to have chickens. Soon, I hope 🙂 I’m still in the planning stage and my city just recently passed an ordinance allowing chickens. Since I’m planning my garden for them, I’d love the opportunity to win Chicken Gardens. Thanks.

  58. I owned chickens for the first time last year, but had my entire flock of 18 wiped out over the course of 10 months by raccoon’s, foxes, and a hawk. That number also included 3 brand new chicks that one of my chickens had just hatched. I was devastated, but have decided to try again, as soon as me and my husband finish building our new bigger, and stronger chicken coop. The Free-Range Chicken Gardens book would be great, since I am also planting a garden for the first time this year. Thanks! 🙂

  59. Oh, I’m soooo excited to get my own chicken garden started. It’s going to be fabulous! I hope I win…

  60. Ooo, how to decide which book I’d like… hmmm, whichever I don’t win, I’ll need to buy. I have chickens and lots of eggs right now. I would LOVE to hear how to create a beautiful yard and garden for kids and chickens, without letting both pick (eat?) all my flowers! Free Range-Chicken Gardens is the choice!!

  61. We moved into a new house this winter and my kids are begging for chickens for our new, huge yard. We’re just learning about them and setting up our garden plots. The Chicken Garden would be a great resource!

  62. We currently have 3 hens and just got 2 chicks last week. We have been expanding our veggie garden and trying to find good ways to keep the girls in OK areas so the Chicken Garden book would be wonderful!

  63. The Fresh Egg Cookbook…with 8 hens, I am always looking for new egg dishes…

  64. Christine C says:

Hoping to win the new Chicken Gardens book- we are seriously considering buying chicks to raise in our garden this summer to reduce the bugs.

  65. Christine C says:

  73. Elizabeth says:

I would love a copy of Free Range Chicken Gardens. I had chickens growing up on an organic farm, and it has become very important to me to bring aspects of my childhood into my adulthood. I have a small garden, and am learning all I can about raising my own chickens. I’d love to learn how to best combine the two.

  74. Deb Anderson says:

I am sharing and commenting and I already liked your Facebook page. I would love any of the books but the one I would choose would be Chicken Gardens because I just got chickens and I am putting in a ton of garden space this year and could use all the help I can get! It also looks like it’s going to just be beautiful to look at. I’m in love with the little white chicken that looks like a cockatoo in one of the pictures!

  75. Deb Anderson says:

I couldn’t find the share link so I am copy pasting the URL

  76. Sarah Longman says:

I LOVE all my 16 chickens, my kids and I can’t stop picking out new baby chicks every time we go to FHA. We started with 4, and now they have taken over the yard! We have a summer and winter home (the green house) for them and the only place they are not allowed is the deck (I have to have a poop free zone). I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my yard to beautiful and chicken friendly. A CHICKEN WONDERLAND of Happiness.

  77. Tamara Barnes says:

Would love the Fresh Eggs Cookbook! So many fresh eggs and puzzled as to what to do with them. Would love to cook with more give away fewer.

  78. I would like the Chicken Garden book cause I lock up my chickens more often then I would like because they wreck my yard.

  79. Definitely Free Range Chicken Gardens! We just purchased our first home and right after the vegetable garden goes in I’m gearing up for the chickens!

  80. Jacie W. says:

I’d love to own chickens but need the push to try! The first book sounds amazing; I’d love to read it.

  81. Oh my gosh I would love to have a copy of your book! I’ve applietd to be part of the Seattle Tilth Chicken Coop Tour this summer and want my yard as nice as it can be. The timing is perfect to get started 🙂

  82. I’m so excited to have this book. I love having my ladies range around the yard. I look forward to learning ways to have them be part of the environment and not fenced off from it. Sweet!
If chosen, I would like Free Range Chicken Gardens! Thanks!

  83. Melissa says:

I would love to win the Free Range Chicken Gardens book!

  84. i’d love the free range chicken gardens book – we’re starting to landscape the yard and want to put in a garden, and i’m trying to figure out how to mix chickens and gardening.

  85. Stephanie says:

Would love to add chickens to my garden but don’t know where to start – would love this book to help!

  86. I would love the chicken in your garden book. I have a garden and chickens, but never let them in it because they destroy it. I would love to see my happy hens in my garden though!

  87. I need the Free Range Chicken Garden book. My hens have been banned from the garden area

  88. I think the egg cook book would get the most use right now. The hens are off and laying like they mean it. But I do want to make. More chicken friendly backyard. Those girls can be so destructive.

  89. I would LOVE to win the chicken garden book. I love our chickens, and I love our garden, but the two of them together quickly becomes a huge headache. I want to let them free range, but I’d also like to have more than eggs to eat when all is said and done.

  90. Would love to win a copy of your book! I am on the fence about raising chickens …really, really tempted.

  91. I hope you are doing well and that your surgery went well.

I Liked your Facebook page, even though I love what you’re doing 🙂

I’ve posted this blog post on my Facebook page at

If I can only pick one… I would like to win your book, Free-Range Chicken Gardens. From what I’ve read, and that it’s now in its 4th printing, speaks volumes as to why I would like to win it. It sounds like it is comprehensive and covers areas that are of primary interest to me and what I am working towards creating.

Thanks for putting your wisdom into a book for us and for making this giveaway available.

  92. the reason I should have this book
is because I really need to look
    into the why’s and hows
    of animals smaller than cows
with my girlfriend I’ll be off the hook

I would like to win the free range chicken gardens

  93. I have 3 chicks (my first) I could use all the help I can get.I started eating free range eggs 2 years ago and can’t go back so I though I would do my own. I have a 2 ac. organic garden and 6 grandbabies to help.I’m hope to teach them good eating habits. These books would help me do it right the first time! If I win I will let you know how it is going!

  94. I’ve taken a vote amongst the children, and it went unanimously toward wanting to win the book, though the excitement of receiving the regular mail of a magazine almost tipped them the other way. We have only been back in the States for a few months, and are working hard to establish our garden and, eventually, chicken community- we definitely need resources, like the books, to help us with this, since we don’t have anyone to teach us hands-on.

  95. I would LOVE to win either the Chicken magazine subscription or the Free Rangs Chicken Gardens book! I checked the garden book out from the library and I can’t put it down! I am taking notes like crazy since we just got 4 chicks this spring and are planning a part-time free range chicken backyard! I would love the magazine too since I also get a lot of great chicken-raising advice from those too-perfect for the new chicken owner! Thanks and CONGRATS on your book’s success-well deserved!!

  96. I would love to win the magazine 🙂 But I would love to win Free Range Chickens Garden too.

Me and the girls (Penny & GInger) would love to lounge around on the porch swing and read it together this spring 🙂

  97. I would love to win the free range chicken garden book!!!

  98. I would like to win any of them. Would like to free range our chickens but they destroy our garden and I can always use more egg recipes.

  99. I’d love to win Free Range Chicken Gardening. The book would be so helpful in teaching me how to raise my own chickens in the garden.

  100. I’m not really one to hold back in general. This time, I ripped up 800 sq. ft. of lawn and bought 6 chicks. Now I’m scrambling to come up with a plan for the garden and the chicken, which makes Free Range Chicken Gardens just about the perfect read for me right now – quickly – before the chickens outgrow the brooder and the concrete on the fence posts gets set.

  101. I think I’d most like the Free Range Chicken Gardens book

  102. I liked Chicken Gardens on Facebook
