My garden this August

Our newest furbaby - the ninja kitty "Rocky" likes to hang out in the garden and hide in the plants... then he jumps out and grabs your leg when you walk by. He also wrestles with our dog and hunts moths and voles! Good little kitty!

I absolutely adore this daylily - still blooming towards the end of August

Favorite perennial in my garden this year: Monarda 'Marshall's delight' Bee Balm

The new stone raised beds are loaded with tomatoes -some have ripened - we just need a little more time, some pruning and hopefully continued warm weather!

This one is so darn cute I had to take a picture!

Can't decide if I want to let this artichoke flower *or* eat it... pretty but tasty too!

A little bed at the edge of the pasture in between a cherry and a fig tree... which has its first little figs growing!

How did you do the stone raised garden? Does it work better then the wood raised garden? The stones don’t move eventually because of the weight of the soil? Also, I plan on getting chickens for our backyard (we live in the city of Hamburg, NY) but we have an in-ground pool, do you think it’s safe for chickens to walk around it or will they try to go in it? Let me know! I love your website and am excited to buy your new book on chickens!!!

    • Hi Chris – Thanks for visiting!
The stones used were salvaged and are very large, heavy pieces which didn’t need any anchoring so they are laying directly on the sub soil. I wanted to be able to move the stones/raised down the road but would probably recommend mortaring if the stone was smaller pieces. They are nice beds and I think much warmer than the other beds because of the stones ability to absorb heat. Wood is definitely cheaper and easier to work with but decomposes.
Its great that you are getting chickens! They probably won’t try to get into the pool, but will poop all around it, so you may or may not want them to range near it depending on the surface (hardscape or softscape) and use of that space.
      Best of luck~
